HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF A HYPNOSIS SESSION
Being a hypnotherapist is a bit like luving in a goldfish bowl. I find myself constantly answering questions that are put to me by the ‘Watchers’. Probably one of the most frequently asked questions is, “on which kind of people does hypnosis work best.”
Quite a question but let me say this.
The ideal hypnosis subject is the person who is going to get the most out of hypnosis. The one who is going to benefit from the hypnotic session.
The hypnotherapist’s clients are people who are looking for change. A change in behaviour, habit, or perhaps appearance. If you are one of these, I must tell you that that the very first component that you need for a successful outcome to hypnotic intervention is WANT. You’ve got to want that change so much that you can taste it, (to use a well-worn phrase)
Now that change might be weight loss, it might be the tobacco habit, or perhaps you want to be able to fly without fear. Now we know you need
This change, but that’s not enough. You’ve got to want it. Don’t think I’ve got to stop smoking, instead think, I want to stop smoking.
Approach your hypnotic session in this positive manner and you’re already half way to success. Your therapist will enlarge upon this positivity, he will embed in your subconscious the suggestion that your are, in fact, a non-smoker. He’ll probably give you some visualisation to support that fact and the subconscious will accept it all. The subconscious doesn’t know the difference between fiction and reality. This is why we sometimes have those incredibly real dreams.
Now we come to the next point, I’ll call it adaptability, though that might not be quite the right word. What I want to say is, once you are in the hypnotherapist’s chair just ‘go along’ with everything he says. Don’t try to analyse what he’s saying, just accept it. For example, you are having a fear of flying session and you are given the suggestion that you are in an aircraft above the clouds and enjoying it in a wonderfully relax state. OK, just go along with it. If you start to be analytical, or critical, about what is being said, that’s your conscious mind clicking in. We don’t want that. The offered suggestions are for the subconscious mind, on the right hand side of the brain. We don’t want interference from the logical left brain. It will be present, of course, but we want to keep it in the background. Just go along with everything, drift with the tide.
Some people are unduly nervous when they first enter the hypno’s office. They see it as a step into the unknown. A good therapist will do a good pre-talk before starting the hypnotic induction. This will go a long way toward banishing those fears.
Incidentally I have noticed time and time again, that people, who have confessed to nervousness on entering my office, turn out to be model clients. So pre-session nerves are no bar to success.

In the above I have laid out the ingredients for embarking on a hypnotic intervention which will result in a successful outcome.
Summing up is easy.
1. The WANT TO factor – you’ve got to have lots of this
2. Go along with everything.
That’s all there is to it. Your therapist will do the rest.
